Divorce mediation is when you and your spouse work together with a neutral third-party mediator to make decisions regarding your divorce. Mediation is an effective way to help separating couples preserve family assets and deal with financial burdens, such as paying down debt, setting up two households with limited resources and sudden unemployment.
As certified mediators, we help you resolve disputes regarding:
- spousal support
- child custody
- child support
A certified mediator is neutral – and doesn’t work for only one party. The mediator works with both parties to help them arrive at mutually agreeable divorce terms.
As neutral mediators, we don’t impose solutions or give legal advice. But as attorneys, we can inform you of New York State divorce law, including child support. We are also skilled at recognizing legal issues unique to your situation that you and your partner will need to resolve. We can also draft your legal separation agreement.
Our goal is to guide you quickly toward an agreement that you both feel is fair and workable. Whenever possible, we encourage you to work together between sessions, which speeds the process and saves you money. Mediation is voluntary. You may stop at any time or take a break without incurring additional costs. You pay only for the sessions you attend. And if you try mediation, this does not affect any later decision to pursue a more traditional divorce.
