The A B C’s of Mediation
Many couples walk in our door and they have no idea what mediation is- they simply googled “divorce”, and thought the free consultation sounded good! Here is a very brief synopsis of the way that mediation works. Of course, when you schedule your free consultation, we will answer your specific questions in detail. However, what follows is a basic overview of the mediation process:
-You and your soon to be ex spouse meet with us at a complimentary free consultation- we answer your questions and you make certain that you feel comfortable working with us.
-Scheduled at your convenience.
-Meet as often as you want, at a pace that works for both of you
-Usually 2 hours in length
-parenting plan and custody if you have children
-division of assets
-division of debts
-all other issues that must be addressed in a divorce, for example taxes, cars, life insurance to name a few.
-We do not charge a retainer for the mediation sessions.
-You pay after each meeting.
-If you agree on the terms of your agreement, we draft the agreement for you.
-Once the agreement has been drafted, we send you each to a separate review attorney- These attorneys each review the agreement on your behalf and represent your interests.
Once the Separation Agreement has been signed by both of you, in order to obtain your divorce, the Agreement along with the divorce forms must be submitted to the Court. The Judge needs to sign the papers in order for you to be legally divorced.
