Your child has just come home all excited with great news – NYU has an open school night! And Susie or Tommy says, wouldn’t it be wonderful if they could go there! And live right in the city!! Black spots are appearing in front of your eyes and just before you pass out, one thought rears up from your unconscious: NYU is one of the most expensive college in the U.S.
All the costs of college and how you and your ex will split them should be mediated. Our separation agreements address issues such as: How will parents allocate tuition? Will there be a SUNY (state school) cap and if so which type of SUNY school? (A few state schools have higher tuition.) How will pre-college costs be paid for? Will child support be readjusted as each child leaves for college? Do study abroad and sorority/fraternity Moncler outlet dues fall under college costs? And of course, who pays for all these road trips. If your child loves only schools in California, and wants to take five or six trips to visit, you and your ex will not only rack up a lot of frequent flyer points but also a lot of airline bills.
Our goal in mediation is to plan for every contingency relating to college expenses so that when college arrives, you’ve already discussed how these expenses are covered.
